In any organization, data management is as important as its creation. In engineering organizations CAD data is undoubtedly one of the biggest assets. CAD data is at the center of the company as many departments like design, engineering, manufacturing and even marketing depend on it to perform their tasks on a daily basis. That is why it is critical to plan the complete life cycle of the data: How it’s created; how it’s filed and stored; how it’s revised; how it’s protected; how it’s output to individuals and departments, are just some of the many considerations in setting up and maintaining an efficient CAD database.
Many companies employ a Product Database Management (PDM) or Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software to secure and organize their data. As every organization is different, so is its requirement for data management. There are good practices for CAD data management, but one shoe does not fit all.
